Slide Talk by Ann Havemeyer: “A Connecticut Steeplechase”

Date: 02/22/2020
Time: 2:00 pm-2:45 pm

When Norfolk’s Church of Christ decided in 1811 that it was time to construct a new meetinghouse, they specified only two things: to build “as good a house as you can for Six Thousand Dollars” and that it be “a meeting house with a steeple.” Not a cupola, like recently-constructed churches in nearby Salisbury and South Canaan, but a steeple. Why were steeples so important in early 19th century Connecticut and what did they look like?  Come on a steeplechase in this slide lecture by Ann Havemeyer at the Norfolk Library, Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2:00 p.m.
